National Dislocated Worker Grant Program

NATIONAL DISLOCATED WORKER GRANT PROGRAM

The national dislocated worker grant program is designed to assist the state in responding to and recovering from unexpected emergencies, major disasters, or unexpected layoff events and major economic dislocations that cause large-scale job loss. National dislocated worker grants are time-limited based on the need for and availability of grants in Iowa.

EMPLOYMENT RECOVERY DISLOCATED WORKER GRANTS

Employment recovery dislocated worker grants provide career and training services to respond to mass layoffs or plant closures and industry-wide layoffs.

SERVICES FOR THOSE THAT QUALIFY MAY INCLUDE

Career services that cover a broad range of activities, including skill assessments, staff assisted resume preparation and job development, the development of an individual employment plan, career counseling and career planning, financial literacy, adult basic education, pre-employment training, and work experience.

Training services to include occupational skills training, on-the-job training, incumbent worker training, and entrepreneurial training.

Support service may be provided, when necessary, to enable individual participation in career or training services.  Supportive services include dependent care assistance, transportation reimbursement, and required clothing and tools for work.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

To be eligible, individuals must meet the below criteria:

  1. 18 years of age or older 
  2. A citizen of the United States or U.S. Territory, a U.S. permanent resident, or an alien/refugee lawfully admitted to the U.S., and
  3. Registered with Selective Service if applicable (Males born after 12/31/1959) 
  4. Dislocated worker as defined by one of the below: 
    • Terminated or laid off through no fault of your own including a separation from active military service or 
    • Self-employed and now unemployed because of economic condition or a natural disaster in the community or 
    • Displaced Homemaker or 
    • Spouse of a member of the Armed Forces who is unemployed/underemployed or lost employment due to relocation 

 

HOW TO GET STARTED

Register on IowaWORKS.gov to have access to all of our online services including career assessments, skills matching, resume and cover letter creation, and automated job searches.

Call or visit your local IowaWORKS Office to meet with a Career Planner to determine eligibility for the national dislocated worker grant program.

IT VIRTUAL Training Program 

A career in Information Technology might be for you! 

IowaWORKS and JobWORKS Education & Training Systems have partnered to offer TechWORKS training program, a first-of-its-kind training that will quickly prepare you for success as an IT Support Specialist. This fun and interactive 12-week course is offered 3 days a week via Virtual Classroom. 

A laptop is provided to students, and upon successful completion will leads to 2 valuable certificates:  

  • A+ Certification 
  • IT Fundamentals Certification
